 Tortoises should not be subjected to sustained temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius. They are cold-blooded and do not hibernate in the winter, like turtles.  They need a warm enclosure and plenty of grass such as timothy hay where they rest covered or partially covered with the hay. Outbuildings or greenhouses with a safe heat source is one possibility. Smaller tortoises should be brought inside during sustained cold bouts below 40 degrees F or 4 C. if the heat source will not be able to maintain the desired temperature due to extreme cold weather, such as in the teens or below freezing.  Buy a mango. Eat it. Inside the mango is a large seed encased in a brown oval husk. Rinse the seed and don't worry about the strands of fruit attached to it. Put the seed in a paper towel and place somewhere to dry for a few days. Once the mango husk is dry crack it open with a ping hammer or similar tool. Inside the husk is the actual seed. Discard the husk.  Place the seed in a large pot of dirt, about two inches deep and mist with water. The container should receive some sun. Mist with water every few days and do not allow to dry out and do not overwater because the seed will rot and may not sprout. In a few weeks or less you will see a green shoot emerge from the seed.  Never put yourself or others in danger in order to help a turtle in the road. As much as most of us want to save animals, unfortunately we can’t save the world. We do the best we can, whenever we can, but sometimes we can’t help because the circumstances are not right. We don’t want to come to a sudden stop on a highway to retrieve a turtle. But, if traffic conditions are right we could pull to the side of the road, scope for any traffic and help the turtle.  Depending on whether it’s a country road or highway traffic may be busy or sparse. If it’s a busy city road or highway do not take risks.  If you are able to safely retrieve the turtle be sure to hold it from the back part of the shell. Snapping turtles may bite.  The best thing to do is take the turtle to the side of the road it was heading, and deposit it off the road.
