How to Keep From Getting Sunburned at the Beach

 Protecting yourself from sunburn at the beach is essential for enjoying a day in the sun safely. Here are some tips to help prevent sunburn:

  1. Apply Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin, including your face, ears, neck, arms, legs, and feet. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

  2. Seek Shade: Seek shade whenever possible, especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Set up a beach umbrella, canopy, or seek shelter under trees or a beach cabana to reduce direct exposure to the sun's rays.

  3. Wear Protective Clothing: Cover up with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to shield your skin from the sun. Look for clothing with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) ratings for added sun protection.

  4. Use Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays by wearing sunglasses with UV protection. Look for sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays to minimize the risk of eye damage.

  5. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, especially when spending time outdoors in the sun. Dehydration can worsen the effects of sun exposure and increase the risk of sunburn.

  6. Limit Sun Exposure: Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially if you have fair skin or are prone to sunburn. Take breaks indoors or in the shade to give your skin a rest from the sun's rays.

  7. Avoid Tanning Beds: Avoid using tanning beds or sunlamps, which can expose your skin to harmful UV radiation and increase the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.

  8. Be Mindful of Reflection: Remember that sand, water, and other reflective surfaces can intensify UV radiation and increase the risk of sunburn. Take precautions even when lounging in the shade or under an umbrella.

  9. Check the UV Index: Check the UV index forecast for your area before heading to the beach. Plan outdoor activities accordingly, and take extra precautions on days when the UV index is high.

  10. Monitor Your Skin: Keep an eye on your skin for signs of sunburn, such as redness, pain, and blistering. If you notice any signs of sunburn, seek shade immediately and apply soothing treatments like aloe vera gel to help alleviate discomfort.

By following these tips and practicing sun safety, you can enjoy a day at the beach while minimizing the risk of sunburn and protecting your skin from sun damage.

How to Water Your Herb Garden

Many herbs are native to a Mediterranean climate, a climate that is fairly dry, with periodic rain. Even if you live in a hot, humid climate, too much water for some herbs will spell their demise. Examples of herbs that do not need a lot of water: oregano,  thyme, lavender, rosemary. Mint herbs may wilt with out enough water so they stand out as a exception but still do not require much water unless you see them starting to wilt.  So, with herbs sometimes it's better to resist the temptation of over-care and just allow the herb to grow without much attention. Of course there are exceptions to this and the best practice is to monitor the herbs and if any look sick then take the appropriate action. 

How to Stop Fighting When You Have Young Kids Involved

  One of the saddest things you can see is a married, separated or divorced couple escalating their fight against one another when there are children involved. It's so very sad for the children, words can hardly describe.  What is even sadder is the couple may be actually fighting over the kids, like the kids are some kind of commodity.
